A Webinar by:

Ellyn Satter, MS, MSSW, Dietitian and Family Therapist

Health policy has long defined child BMI in excess of the 85th/95th percentiles as “overweight”/ “obesity.” What is different with the 2023 edition of AAP Clinical Practice Guidelines for Child Obesity is lack of nuance with respect to diagnosis and treatment. AAP’s “best practice” guidelines stipulate referral of all “diagnosable” children to high intensity treatment. Such treatment produces small and highly variable weight loss and contributes to dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors relative to eating and weight. This webinar outlines child-competence based intervention: avoiding interference with children’s normal growth and addressing the causes of child weight acceleration. It emphasizes the power of the Satter Division of Responsibility in Feeding (sDOR) in supporting each child’s genetically consistent growth.
